What are Meta-Aramids?

Meta-aramid is typically made by spinning the fiber in a chemical solution, a process called wet spinning. This results in the molecular chain portion of the semi-crystalline fiber being oriented along the fiber axis.

Compared to medium-strength nylon and polyester fibers, meta-aramid fibers such as Nomex® are highly resistant to temperature, chemical degradation and abrasion. Fibers with these toughnesses are able to withstand high levels of stress when exposed to flames or temperatures up to 752 degrees Fahrenheit (400 degrees Celsius).

Meta-aramid is softer and more conductive than para-aramid.

Advantages of meta-aramid fiber
Flame retardancy
Durability
Comfortable
Easy to care for
Meta-aramid fibers are thermally stable, inherently flame-retardant fibers. They are strong and wear-resistant. Although they can be dyed in a variety of shades, they do not retain their color well and are prone to discoloration.

A well-known meta-aramid is Nomex®, used in industrial areas for firefighting and flame retardant clothing.
